Why websites use WebP
WebP was designed by Google to make web images smaller, so many sites serve it to save bandwidth. Desktop software, older photo apps and many upload forms still expect JPG or PNG, which is why a saved WebP image can be awkward to use.
Converting decodes the WebP and saves it as a standard JPG at the quality you choose. Animated WebP files are converted as a still image of their first frame.
Tips
- Respect copyright: converting an image does not give you the right to reuse it.
- If the WebP has transparency you want to keep, convert to PNG with another tool instead.
- Converting a WebP to JPG makes the file larger; that is normal.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the JPG bigger than the WebP?
WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG.
What about animated WebP files?
Only the first frame is converted, because JPG cannot hold animation.
Does it keep the image size?
Yes. The JPG has the same width and height in pixels as the WebP.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
